I remembered the excitement I felt when I got the mail that my book had been published. I took out all the hidden poems and put them out there. Then I saw the poetry publishing challenge by Bookleaf Publishing and decided to try it. Ever since she came forward with a story idea to write about vampires, I believed it was possible. My best friend, Anakha, was the one who first introduced me to the idea of publishing a book. What made you take the step to publish now? I was scared of criticism, so I hid everything. But I always keep all my poems and scribblings behind my phone’s pad because I feared putting them out there. There are several such incidents that made me write. That day, I went home and wrote this poem on my phone’s notepad. I envied those who could dance so freely, but I was self-conscious and shy. Deep inside, I wanted to dance, but my body won’t move. Everyone around me started to dance, but I was rooted to the spot. My friend and I went to my classmate’s wedding function, and the videographer told the bride’s friends to dance as she entered. Mention one incident that inspired you to write the poem “An Open Letter to Shyness.”? That I was not completely alone, I wrote this poetry collection for those like me. At this time, I saw Susan Cain’s video, and I felt so happy to be represented and understood. As I mentioned in my poem, “Self-hatred became a hobby”. I believed I had no place in this world, I was always too scared, and opportunities seemed to fly by me. I am a shy and quiet kid, and I used to hate myself for that.

I decided to go ahead and upgrade which gave me access to a publishing consultant, some editing services and a few other details explained on the website. There are options after you complete the challenge to “upgrade” your package, but they are not required. All the relevant info is available on their website: Writeathon Canada | BookLeaf Publishing Completing the competition allows gets your work copyrighted, and an IBSN, and your book becomes available for purchase. I think its very cool for a small commitment and relatively modest fee, I can have a published written work that I can gift to others or enjoy myself. Now, there are lots of warnings out there to avoid vanity publishers (companies that charge the author money, sometimes ridiculous amounts, to get published) but so far, my experience with this challenge has been overly positive, and I have definitely wasted $50 on other less permanent adventures. By completing the challenge, you would get to have your poetry published. The company holding the challenge is BookLeaf Publishing and the fee was $50. Essentially, the goal was to write one poem per day or if your schedule doesn’t allow for a daily commitment, as long as you write all 21 poems and have them submitted by the deadline, it counts. I recently participated in a 21 Day Poetry Writing Challenge.
